Russian President Vladimir Putin has postponed a scheduled visit to Turkey amid Moscow’s anger at Ankara over the forced landing of a Syria-bound plane carrying Russian nationals."The visit has been postponed, the dates will be agreed upon," said Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s spokesman, on Thursday. Peskov also said the Russian president was to discuss energy issues, including the implementation of the South Stream pipeline project and the heightened tension between Turkey and Syria. The visit had not been cancelled and “will take place” later, the spokesman added. According to media reports, Putin was scheduled to visit Turkey on October 15, but it might take place in November. The news came only a day after Turkey’s F-16 jets intercepted the Syrian Airbus A320 late Wednesday and escorted it to Ankara’s Esenboga Airport. Moscow asked Ankara for clarification over the forced landing of the Syrian plane, which was carrying 17 Russian nationals including children. The Russian Foreign Ministry accused Turkey of putting the lives of the Russians at risk, as they did not allow its embassy staff access to the Russian passengers. Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the plane was grounded while flying in Turkey’s airspace because of information that it might be carrying “certain equipment in breach of civil aviation rules.” However, a Russian source, whose name was not mentioned in the report, said, “Neither weapons nor any kind of systems or parts for military equipment were on board or could have been on board.” The Turkish authorities allowed the plane and its passengers to leave Ankara nine hours after landing, but they seized parts of the cargo.
