Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says national dialog and understanding are the only possible solutions that can end the unrest in Syria. President Ahmadinejad said during a press conference after addressing the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday: “Through national dialog and understanding, the sides to the Syrian conflict can reach a better and more stable situation.” He stressed that only national understanding achieved through dialog can settle the crisis in Syria and warned that war could not end the conflict in the country. He said: “The social context of Syria does not lend itself to certain tribes gaining power through war, and [if that happens,] it will be followed by subsequent wars.” He said that Iran was working to set up a contact group comprised of both sides to the conflict in Syria to facilitate the national dialog and added that those who beat the drums of war in Syria had better understand the situation of the country and refrain from interfering so that the crisis can be settled through dialog.
