The Iranian Foreign Ministry says the US will violate its international commitments to fight terrorism should it go ahead with its plan to remove the terrorist Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) from its blacklist of terrorist organizations. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said on Tuesday “The US will violate its international commitments and undermine global efforts to combat terrorism if it removes the MKO, which has a long record of terrorist activities, from its list of terrorist organizations.” He criticized the US double standards on terrorism and said Washington’s use of terrorist groups as a tool to advance its political objectives and interests was not a new issue at all. Mehmanparast noted that “the US government must be held accountable for the blood of thousands of Iranian and Iraqi citizens, who were assassinated by the terrorist group,” if it delists the organization. On September 21, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sent the US Congress a classified communication about the decision. The MKO fled to Iraq in 1986, where it enjoyed the support of Iraqi executed dictator Saddam Hussein and set up its camp in the eastern province of Diyala, near the Iranian border. The organization is listed as a terrorist organization by much of the international community and is responsible for numerous acts of terror and violence against Iraqi civilians as well as Iranian civilians and officials.
