A senior United States official has said Washington is set to unveil measures for increased assistance to armed groups in Syria. According to AFP, the unnamed State Department official claimed in New York On Tuesday that the US assistance will not include weapons or ammunition. The official said, after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met UN-Arab League peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi "We've been clear about our assistance and the type of assistance we are providing and that is going to continue." Clinton will preside over the meeting of the so-called "Friends of Syria" group scheduled to be held on Friday. The US has already provided some $25 million to the armed groups, calling it non-lethal aid to help them purchase communications devices. The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the armed militants are foreign nationals, mostly from Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan.
