Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar said Tuesday Iran had the right to access peaceful nuclear technology. Malaysia desires a world free from nuclear weapons but at the same time it respects the right of countries to access nuclear technology for civilian purposes, the Malaysian news agency, Bernama, quoted Albar as saying. ”We hope that Iran and the opposing sides would peacefully resolve the issue and reach a conclusion,” he said, and referred to his phone conversation with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Sunday. ”It is important that the negotiations proceed without obstacles laid on its path.” A meeting of European, Russian, Chinese and US officials in London on Monday failed to come up with a consensus on how to proceed with Iran over its nuclear program. However, it was agreed that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) would hold a special session in Vienna on Feb 2.
