Secretary General of Iran Narcotics Control Headquarters (INCH) cautioned here Saturday the anti-drug organizations are using contradictory figures on drug consumption and addiction. ,The international organizations misuse these figures for their own use to fit their aims,Fada Hossein Malkei said. On the report of the UN Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on the illicit drug situation in Iran, he added that releasing contradictory figures on the number of drug addicts in Iran in addition to misuse by the international bodies will also confound public opinion and instill despair among the public. ,Unfortunately the growing trend of the puppy cultivation in Afghanistan has caused serious problems in Iran s earnest efforts to combat the menace, he said. He further referred to parts of the UNODC report on number of drug addicts. ,Is it not the drug cultivation in Afghanistan under the supervision of the US and Britain and mishandling and neglect of the issue on part of international organizations in combating narco-terrorism in the country the primary factor it spread of addiction in Iran and the world?` Unfortunately the Westerners have not only carried out an effective policy to reduce drug cultivation in Afghanistan, but have recently sought ways to legalize narcotics cultivation, Maleki added. He also slammed what he said were the double-standards of Western policies in Afghanistan. `We believe that all nations and international organizations should, similar to Iran, be serious and transparent in their policies to combat drug production and trafficking.` Iran s vicinity with the world s biggest producer of opium has been the most critical problem of the country during the past 25 years and at least a 10-year period is needed to smash the facilities of drug production in Afghanistan. Iranian police is confiscating up to 85 percent of narcotics, opium and morphine in particular from international drug traffickers, he added. Maleki in a meeting with representative of UNODC Antonio Arbitrero laid out here Wednesday the government s policies on combating illicit drug trafficking and consumption. The policies are based on three factors, the most important of which is the relentless pursuit of international drug traffickers by strict control of borders and strengthening of anti-drug officers, Maleki said. He also warned of a conference organized by the French in Afghanistan in which the topic under the discussion is to decide on the legalization of narcotics. Arbitrero responded that he was unaware of such a conference saying that he will pursue the issue in earnest and convey the result to the Iranian officials.
