He added: “The Islamic Republic of Iran has always played a key role in ensuring security of the Persian Gulf, and Iran has worked actively to ensure the health, prosperity and advancement of regional nations. In further comments, President Ahmadinejad described as baseless Western claims that Iran is after nuclear weapons. The Iranian president pointedly added: “The Islamic Republic of Iran has declared on numerous occasions that it does not believe in nuclear weapons, Iran has no need for nuclear weapons, and Iran believes that all countries which possess nuclear weapons aren’t able to use these weapons in practice”. Turning to the issue of sanctions, President Ahmadinejad said Western sanctions against Iran will never lead to Iran losing its independence, or the Iranian nation giving up on its quest for scientific and technological advancement. In further comments, Pres. Ahmadinejad set out Iran’s points of views with regards to the crisis in Syria. He said Iran believes that all parties to the Syrian conflict should sit round the negotiating table, and reach a “national understanding”. Commenting on Asia’s status within the world, President Ahmadinejad said: “The rich culture and intellectual heritage of Asian countries can help establish a fairer and more just world, and help rectify the current world order”.
