The secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Saeed Jalili, has said the only way to solve the Syrian crisis is to respect the rights and demands of the Syrian people, and to hold free, fair and democratic elections in that country. speaking on Monday in a meeting with the UN –Arab League Joint Special Envoy for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Saeed Jalili emphasized that no one has the right to decide for the Syrian people, and that a political solution should be found to the Syrian conflict, and all violence and fighting should be brought to an end. Saeed Jalili praised Lakhdar Brahimi's efforts to bring peace to Syria. He pointedly added: "It looks as if some parties are opposed to holding of democratic elections in Syria. This is because they want to impose their own will on the Syrian people, under the pretext that the Syrian people have decided". Jalili said the start of talks between the Syrian government and opposition groups without setting pre-conditions for the talks, is certainly a good start for returning calm to Syria.
