Lebanon’s army says Syrian insurgents have attacked a Lebanese military checkpoint near the border with Syria. the army said in a Saturday statement that the attack took place in the Arsal region on Friday but there were no casualties. The army said "Overnight a large number of insurgents attacked a Lebanese army post in the Arsal region. This was the second time in less than a week that the so-called Free Syrian Army has entered Lebanese territory." It added that Lebanese military forces have been sent “to the area and began to pursue the gunmen, who fled after the attack towards the mountains and several border towns and villages" inside Lebanon. The army noted that its forces "do not allow any party to use Lebanese territory to implicate Lebanon into events in neighboring countries, and reaffirms its determination to protect Lebanese territory." Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are the driving factor behind the unrest and deadly violence while the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.
