Today the Islamic Iran is the banner bearer of awakening, unity and dignity of the world nations. Nations that seek independence and justice in Asia and Africa consider the Islamic revolution as a promise for breaking up the global unjust system and have consciously pinned hope to Iran. In these world developments, the views and thoughts of the Islamic Republic system on the international arena can be a role model for the Non-Aligned Movement to turn it into an international power. For sure, regarding the multitude of NAM members that comprise two third of the world countries, this organization deserves an international role on the basis of non-alignment ideas. With this logical belief, the Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to work for institutionalizing NAM’s role in the world system. Based on the fundamental teachings of the great founder of the Islamic revolution Imam Khomeini (God’s mercy upon his soul); i.e. the slogan of neither east nor west, the Islamic Republic of Iran joined the NAM at the 6th NAM meeting in Havana just after the triumph of the Islamic Revolution. Due to joining Baghdad military pact, Iran could not attend the first NAM summit in Belgrade in 1961 and since then the membership of Iran had not been raised in the movement. In 1979 after the Islamic revolution and the collapse of the despotic Pahlavi regime, the dissolution of Central Treaty Organization CENTO and following the declaration of Iran's foreign policy stances, Iran's membership was seriously put forth at the NAM. One month after the victory of the revolution, the then Cuban foreign minister announced that Iran's new policy enables this country to joint the NAM. Iran has always had a dynamic and active presence in the movement. Issues like Palestine, opposition to anti-religious moves and racism, demand for opening the north countries market to the export of south countries have been among Iran's efforts inside the movement. Reciprocally the NAM has been active in supporting Iran's nuclear rights in the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA. Generally speaking after Iran's joining the movement, the idea of enhancing the movement’s position in global equations has got momentum, especially given that the Islamic Republic of Iran along with Cuba, Malaysia and South Africa are among the 4 pioneers in awakening the Non-Aligned countries and they have always stressed the need for realizing the movement's demands. The most important stances of the Islamic Republic of Iran manifested in the speeches of the officials at NAM summits have focused on the demand for upgrading the international role of the movement on to materialize equal rights on the global scene. Iran believes in reviewing the movement's principles for completing the non-alignment raison-d’être with regard to the recent developments in the world. Bolstering the NAM status through cultural and political interactions among members, further making the movement's organs more active, paying attention to the wide political capacity, a general review of the objectives and structure of the UN Security Council and getting the permanent membership with veto power at the Security Council for at least one of the members of the NAM are among the important issues highlighted by Iran. From the viewpoint of analysts, political independence and distance of NAM members from the bullying powers require to participate in creating a lawful structure to stop or at least reduce big powers’ unilateralism. The proposal of the head of Iran's judiciary Ayatollah Amoli Larijani to create a judicial and legal structure inside the NAM is among the measures which can have a direct impact on the fate of the countries. Therefore, in evaluating the movement's role and status, political, economic and cultural capabilities and capacities as well as national identity of the NAM members should be taken into consideration for pushing forward the movement's joint objectives and advancing on the path of peace, security keeping aloof from the world bullying extremist powers. Observers believe Iran as an important international player can have an effective role in materializing and putting into action the movement's ideas. In line with other members of the NAM Iran has taken considerable measures to change international economic and political relations. Since the beginning of its membership in the NAM, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been seeking to materialize the movement's objectives and has played an active role in pushing forward the NAM ideals in negating the hegemony of the domineering powers and campaign against injustice in the international system. The brilliant record of the Islamic Republic as a member of the NAM in warding off the hegemony of the colonialist powers led to the high consensus for Iran's presidency of the movement and holding of the 16th NAM summit in Tehran. Islamic Republic of Iran assumes the movement's presidency for the next 3 years and it is expected that the movement will be more active in world arenas. Expansion of ties with independent states is one of the strategic policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Therefore, Iran as the next chairman of NAM can play an effective role in guiding the movement's activities and Tehran summit is an opportunity for materializing the movement's ideals. On the whole one can say that today after the passage of decades of the NAM emergence and materialization of cooperation and participation of the members in different political, economic and cultural fields, the necessity is felt that the movement should broach on reformation of international system to put hurdle at the insatiable greed of the bullying powers led by the US and to play a more efficacious role in the world developments.
