An Iranian paper said on Sunday that the savage terrorist bombings in Iraq are carried out by the US and British green light in order to impede formation of a ”unity government” in Iraq. ”The US and British governments are doing their utmost to interrupt the formation of a unity government in Iraq by means of creating ethnic and sectarian differences, and the evidence for that are the Thursday bombings,” said `Kayhan International.` It stressed that the previous terrorist acts and similar ones which will undoubtedly be carried out in the weeks and months ahead must be having the blessings of the US and British governments as a bid to raise sectarian tensions and impede the creation of a unity government guaranteed to bring together Shi`ite majority and Sunni minority and the Kurds. The editorial argued that the US and British officials were deeply concerned that formation of a unity government in Iraq would exclude ”pro-Western elements such as Iyad Allawi,” who failed to win enough votes to secure a place in the new executive body. Stressing that Iraq`s parliamentary election results were extremely important for Capitol Hill and Downing Street, it added, ”Otherwise, the US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and British Prime Minister Tony Blair would have never visited the war-hit country on the week that the elections were held.” The daily further argued that failure of the so-called ”global war on terror” has dragged down the US plans for a greater Middle East and ”ended in disgrace for its mentally challenged president. ”The US government now continues to underestimate the cost of the Iraq war and will work hard to prove that its strategy has been a success,” said the paper. The real cost to the US of the Iraq war is likely to be around $2 trillion, up to 10 times more than previously thought. ”Thus it (Washington) will resort to all political, propaganda and violent means to disturb unity among Muslims ... in order to pave the way for formation of a pro-American government that will protect and secure Western interests in the years ahead,” it argued adding that the Thursday bombings in Iraq were the latest of such means. Predicting that the bombings would continue in Iraq in the future, it urged the Iraqi leaders to stay vigilant to detect and neutralize these conspiracies and interventions from the very outset. Kayhan International further argued that the early results of the general elections demonstrated that the ”Iraqis have the capacity and the means to co-exist, join in the decision-making and reconstruction process, open the way for formation of a unity government, and blunt the disintegration of the country.” It reiterated that Iraqis ”certainly need no help from the Western powers to run their country in peace and security. The editorial also predicted that the insurgency would lose strength in Iraq after formation of its new government and after the occupier forces start the withdrawal process.
